The Sleep Dilemma in 2024!

My sleep schedule became a mess working days were spent sitting at a desk, working long hours, and meals were often whatever fast food I could grab on the go. Evenings became a routine of takeout dinners and endless scrolling through Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Before I knew it, it was past 2 AM, and I’d tell myself, “Just a few more minutes.” Next thing I knew, it was 4 AM. With only a few hours left before work, I faced a tough choice: force myself to sleep—knowing it could take an hour—or keep scrolling and power through until morning. Neither option was ideal. The result? Exhaustion. My productivity plummeted, and I found myself irritable for no reason. Desperate, I started searching online for quick fixes: sleep pills, tricks to fall asleep fast, anything that might help. But what I found was so much more.

Sleep Environment

Creating the right sleep environment was the first game-changer for me. I quickly learned that lighting plays a huge role in how well we rest. The bright lights of Dubai might be beautiful, but they aren’t great for sleep. I started by dimming the lights in my bedroom about an hour before bed to signal to my brain that it was time to wind down. More importantly, I made a rule to avoid blue light from screens—no more endless scrolling through TikTok or Instagram before bed. Experts suggest keeping away from phones and tablets at least 30 minutes before sleep to give your body a chance to produce melatonin naturally. It wasn’t easy at first, but the difference it made was incredible.

Another key change was upgrading my bed setup. A good mattress, pillows, and even a mattress topper can make all the difference between tossing and turning or sleeping through the night. Investing in a quality mattress provided the support I needed, while the right pillows ensured my neck stayed aligned. For me, finding that balance between activity and rest made all the difference in achieving a deeper, more refreshing sleep.

Meditating

Meditation became one of my go-to techniques for calming my mind before bed. Even just 5-10 minutes of focused breathing or guided meditation helped me let go of the stress and racing thoughts from the day. Apps like Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer offer easy-to-follow guided sessions that are perfect for winding down before sleep. It’s amazing how a few moments of mindfulness can slow down your thoughts and prepare your mind for rest. By clearing away mental clutter, meditation made it easier to fall asleep quickly and wake up feeling more refreshed. It’s a simple practice, but the impact on my sleep quality was significant.

Coffee Timing

Adjusting my coffee timing was another key change that helped me improve my sleep. I love a good cup of coffee, but I realized that drinking it too late in the day was keeping me awake longer than I wanted. Now, I make sure to have my coffee between 11 AM – 1 PM. This way, the caffeine has time to leave my system by 11 PM, making it much easier for me to fall asleep. By keeping my caffeine intake to the earlier part of the day, I noticed that I felt more relaxed and ready for rest when bedtime rolled around.
